People’s Temple moves to Columbus Avenue.

1860

Originally the Berkeley Street Temple, it is located at the corner of Columbus Avenue and Berkeley Street. The congregation had met initially on Pine Street. Henry Dexter is the first pastor. The church offers “free seats” rather than charging the traditional pew fee and engages in social action programs. It changes its name and soon becomes one of the largest Congregationalist churches in the city by 1893. The congregation moves with the nearby Union Church in 1896.
